“I believe that we will win!, I believe that we will win!” were the chants that rang out across America last night as USA lost 2-1 in extra-time to Belgium at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador.

Even President Obama was filmed on camera chanting USA’s unofficial motto during the match, but one thing fans of the USA can admit is that’s been a roller coaster ride following their beloved team.

The game went to o̶v̶e̶r̶t̶i̶m̶e̶ extra-time after r̶e̶g̶u̶l̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ full time ended with the score 0-0. Belgium took a 2-0 lead during extra time with goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, the US later t̶a̶c̶k̶e̶d̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶a̶ ̶g̶o̶a̶l̶ scored after Julian Green to make it 2-1.

But it seems that USA have found a new national hero in Everton’s g̶o̶a̶l̶t̶e̶n̶d̶e̶r̶ goalkeeper Tim Howard, who broke the record (15) for most saves in one match and then went viral with the hashtag #ThingsTimHowardCouldSave.

USA now appears to have fallen head over heels in love with so̶c̶c̶e̶r̶ football and also managed to get the whole nation behind their boys in Brazil.

With David Beckham, Kaka, David Villa, Thierry Henry and Frank Lampard either currently playing or soon-to-be-starring in the MLS, it’s certainly an exciting time for football in America.
