Power glitch interrupts Super Bowl XLVII in third quarter
(WTVR) — A power glitch for about 30 minutes brought Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans to a standstill.
Commentators said a power surge at the Super Dome resulted in about half of the lights in the stadium shutting off. The other half of the lights stayed on, but the scoreboard went dark.
It happened around 8:35 p.m. during the third quarter as the Ravens lead 28-6 over the 49ers.
The NFL is working feverishly to restore power, according to CBS Sports. Officials said it would probably take about 15 minutes for the lights to come back on.
Around 8:55, commentators said they were told it would take about 15 more minutes for the light to come back on and players were been asked to stay on the field.
Once commentator said the delay would likely affect the momentum of game.
A spokesman for Entergy, the utility that powers the Superdome and much of the area, said the problem was confined to the stadium itself.
“We are providing power to the dome,” said Entergy spokesman Philip Allison. “Power in (the rest of) New Orleans is fine.”
After about a 35 minute delay, the game resumed around 9:10 p.m.
